Your safety, from intake to medication
GLP-1 is prescription medication, and that calls for real medical guidance. That's why we built Lean Clinic around Dutch healthcare rules: a doctor reviews every request, your medication comes from a registered pharmacy, and you're monitored throughout.
Not for everyone, and that is on purpose
Lean Clinic is intended for adults with a medical indication for obesity treatment: a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related health condition. If you do not qualify, or if treatment is not safe for you, you are declined and pay nothing.
- BMI of 30 or higher (obesity)
- Or BMI of 27+ with a health condition
- Adults between 18 and 75 years
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Under 18 years old
- Type 1 or type 2 diabetes
- Active eating disorder
Other medical conditions can also be a reason. We review your full history in the questionnaire and the consultation.
Is losing weight with GLP-1 safe?
For adults with a medical indication, GLP-1 is a safe treatment, provided a doctor assesses beforehand whether the medicine suits you and keeps following you while you use it. It is not without risk: gastrointestinal complaints are common, and in rare cases more serious problems occur, such as an inflamed pancreas or gallstones.
GLP-1 medication has been assessed and authorised by the European Medicines Agency and the Dutch Medicines Evaluation Board, and has been studied in large clinical trials. In diabetes care this group of medicines has been prescribed for years. For weight treatment the track record is shorter, so knowledge about the very long term is still growing.
What is common
Nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and a bloated feeling. Usually in the weeks after a dose increase, and usually the complaints ease once your body adjusts to the dose.
What is rare, but serious
An inflamed pancreas, gallstones or dehydration from persistent vomiting. Rare, which is exactly why it matters to recognise it. If you have severe abdominal pain that does not pass, contact a doctor straight away.
Who it is not suitable for
We prescribe nothing during pregnancy or breastfeeding, after a previous pancreatitis, with an active eating disorder, or with medullary thyroid cancer in the family. The doctor goes through your history and your current medication before any prescription is issued.
What lowers the risk
Building the dose up slowly makes the biggest difference, because complaints peak just after an increase. On top of that, enough protein and exercise keep your muscle mass up, and your care team reads your weekly check-in.
This page offers general information and does not replace medical advice. Whether GLP-1 is safe in your situation is for a doctor to judge after going through your health history.
How we safeguard your safety
Before you receive anything, you go through a medical check that follows the guidelines for prescribing GLP-1 medication.
Medical questionnaire
After creating your account, you fill in a comprehensive questionnaire about your health, medication and lifestyle.
Medication overview
The doctor needs your current medication details. You'll get clear instructions on how to share this with us safely, so the doctor has a complete picture.
Identity verification
Through a secure check, you confirm your identity with a valid ID. This is a legal requirement for prescribing medication.
Video consultation with the doctor
You always have a personal video call with a Dutch doctor. They assess your situation, discuss the treatment plan and explain the risks and side effects.
Medication monitoring
Consent for the LSP is required. This allows the pharmacy to carry out full medication monitoring, and your medication details are shared securely with other healthcare providers.
