For women with PCOS

Losing weight with PCOS, when your body does the maths differently

You eat the same as everyone around you and still gain weight. That is not down to your discipline. With PCOS your metabolism works differently, so your body stores energy faster. We count PCOS as a health condition, which means you can qualify from a BMI of 27. With medical guidance, losing weight is within reach after all.

Woman with PCOS
Sound familiar?
  • You have gained weight without anything changing in what you eat
  • The fat sits around your middle, even when the rest stays slim
  • Your cycle is irregular, or sometimes disappears entirely
  • You have been told to lose weight for years, but no one explains why it is harder for you

Sound familiar? It is biology, not a lack of willpower.

What is different

Why losing weight with PCOS is harder

PCOS is not only about your ovaries. It affects your whole metabolism, and that is why excess weight is much more common with PCOS. Three things work against you here, and they reinforce each other.

Insulin resistance with PCOS

Your body responds less well to insulin and therefore produces more of it. Insulin is a storage hormone, so your body stores the same food as fat sooner. This happens even if you are at a normal weight.

More male hormones

That excess sends fat to your belly instead of your hips. It keeps your cycle irregular and gives many women acne or extra hair growth.

A circle that feeds itself

More belly fat strengthens the insulin resistance, and that raises the male hormones again. That is why it feels like you are working against your own body.

You are not doing anything wrong. Your body just processes the same food differently.

Our approach

Treatment that takes PCOS into account

We treat your weight, not your PCOS. But with PCOS in particular, losing weight can make a real difference. Here is how we go about it.

A doctor who knows your whole situation

A registered doctor looks at your health and at what you already take, from metformin to contraception. Together you decide whether treatment fits you.

Medication that brings calm around food

GLP-1 medication quiets the hunger and the constant thoughts about food. For many women, that does put losing weight within reach, even when diets did not help before.

Coaching focused on protein and strength training

Your coach steers you towards enough protein and strength training, so that you mainly lose fat and keep your muscle mass.

Weekly check-ins

You share how things are going every week. The doctor adjusts your dose to what your body does, not to an average.

Trying to get pregnant right now?

Then this treatment is not for you, and we would rather say so straight away. You must not become pregnant while you are using this medication, which is why we ask about it in the questionnaire. If you want children later, losing weight may actually improve your chances. Discuss that with your GP or gynaecologist. And when you are ready later on, you are welcome here.
